YamlDb is a database-independent format for dumping and restoring data. It complements the database-independent schema format found in db/schema.rb. The data is saved into db/data.yml. This can be used as a replacement for mysqldump or pg_dump, but only for the databases typically used by Rails apps. Users, permissions, schemas, triggers, and other advanced database features are not supported - by design. Any database that has an ActiveRecord adapter should work.
A bridge between using AR and a full blown schema-free db.
Keep your DB schema in sync across all branches effortlessly. Install once, then use `rails db:migrate` normally — the gem handles phantom migration rollback automatically, eliminating schema conflicts and inconsistent database states. Stop wasting hours on DB maintenance locally, CI, staging/sandbox, or even production.

From http://edgeguides.rubyonrails.org/active_record_migrations.html#types-of-schema-dumps: There is however a trade-off: db/schema.rb cannot express database specific items such as triggers, stored procedures or check constraints. While in a migration you can execute custom SQL statements, the schema dumper cannot reconstitute those statements from the database. If you are using features like this, then you should set the schema format to :sql. No longer is this the case. You can now use the default schema format (:ruby) and still preserve your check constraints.
