== DESCRIPTION: html-me converts text to html for posting in the web. It does this two ways. First, it processes the text unsing RedCloth (a textile engine), then it finds all of the _pre_ tags and adds syntax highlighting. == FEATURES/PROBLEMS: * The syntax highlighting embeds the styles in the HTML tags. I currently don't have access to my blog's stylesheet (damned Wordpress) so that's how it needed to be. CSS class names should be added soon.
## Why I have to develop this tool One of my ruby project is using bundler to manage gem dependencies. But the `Gemfile` is very complicate. It requires external `Gemfile` by using ruby `eval`. Because I have lots of similar projects that will use same piece of gems. So I decide to abstract these gems into a standalone `Gemfile`. And let those projects’ `Gemfile` loads it. The problem I met is when I building my docker image. I hope that image can pre-install all the ruby gems in that `Gemfile.lock`. Unluckily, `bundle install` require you must have the `Gemfile`. So I have to find out a way to revert `Gemfile.lock` to a usable `Gemfile`. So here we are!
The start_project gem is a simple way of downloading the latest version of your favourite framework. It's very easy to use: simply install the gem as normal with gem install start_project and then run the command line tool ProjectStart --type {framework} --name {name of project} and it will pull the latest version of the framework and extract it to your machine with the name you provided. Currently, there are 5 frameworks: html 5 boilerplate, bootstrap, 960 grid, 320 and up, and mass gs960 andup320 mass, but I'll be adding more in the future. Have you ever wanted to call <code>exit()</code> with an error condition, but weren't sure what exit status to use? No? Maybe it's just me, then. Anyway, I was reading manpages late one evening before retiring to bed in my palatial estate in rural Oregon, and I stumbled across <code>sysexits(3)</code>. Much to my chagrin, I couldn't find a +sysexits+ for Ruby! Well, for the other 2 people that actually care about <code>style(9)</code> as it applies to Ruby code, now there is one! Sysexits is a *completely* *awesome* collection of human-readable constants for the standard (BSDish) exit codes, used as arguments to +exit+ to indicate a specific error condition to the parent process. It's so fantastically fabulous that you'll want to fork it right away to avoid being thought of as that guy that's still using Webrick for his blog. I mean, <code>exit(1)</code> is so passé! This is like the 14-point font of Systems Programming. Like the C header file from which this was derived (I mean forked, naturally), error numbers begin at <code>Sysexits::EX__BASE</code> (which is way more cool than plain old +64+) to reduce the possibility of clashing with other exit statuses that other programs may already return. The codes are available in two forms: as constants which can be imported into your own namespace via <code>include Sysexits</code>, or as <code>Sysexits::STATUS_CODES</code>, a Hash keyed by Symbols derived from the constant names. Allow me to demonstrate. First, the old way: exit( 69 ) Whaaa...? Is that a euphemism? What's going on? See how unattractive and... well, 1970 that is? We're not changing vaccuum tubes here, people, we're <em>building a totally-awesome future in the Cloud™!</em> include Sysexits exit EX_UNAVAILABLE Okay, at least this is readable to people who have used <code>fork()</code> more than twice, but you could do so much better! include Sysexits exit :unavailable Holy Toledo! It's like we're writing Ruby, but our own made-up dialect in which variable++ is possible! Well, okay, it's not quite that cool. But it does look more Rubyish. And no monkeys were patched in the filming of this episode! All the simpletons still exiting with icky _numbers_ can still continue blithely along, none the wiser.
Welcome to the "Knuckleheads" game, a (slightly enhanced version of the) fully functional text driven game written in Ruby 1.9 and used as a teaching aid for the excellent web-based Ruby course administered by Pragmatic Studios. W00t! W00t! Before playing, fill the default csv file "players.csv" with any number of players by putting the name of each followed by their initial health (an integer separated from the name by a comma). Each player must be on a new line. You may also create an alternate file formatted the same way with a different name. (A sample alternate player file called "more_nuts.csv" is provided as an example.) Invoke an alternate file simply by entering the file name when prompted. How fun is that!! To start the game, start the Ruby file "studio_game.rb" in Ruby 1.9 (or later should work as well) and follow the directions. By the way, there are two players added in hard code with modified behavior. One is "sandro" a LOSER or "clumsy" player who damages his treasure upon collecting it, resulting in the value of each treasure being worth only half of it's original value. What a klutz! The other is a wild-ass player, "bright_eyes." He's a serious partyier! After every other player is spent, he "finds the last beer in the fridge" and can't help but w00t. Bright_eyes starts off just like everyone else. But after being w00ted six times he goes freak'n w00t-crazy and w00ts EVERY TIME! You better think long and hard before committing to joining Mr. bright_eyes. Legend has it that he eats the livers of his prey after he parties them to death, and in this way remains an immortal player! Now fire up that command line for some outrageous fun! CAUTION: It is addictive. My cousin, Schneebo (the Schneebo on my Dad's side, NOT Schneebo Salifronski) once sat down and played Knuckleheads non-stop for 176.39 hours. It's the truth - you've been warned. Oh, and by the way: Three w00ts for Pragmatic Studios - woot, woot, h00ray! - woot, woot, h00ray! - woot, woot, h00ray!
Manage your notes from the console. If you're like me, you spend most of your computing time in a terminal, you have a text-editor set up just to your liking, and you wish you could use it for everything. Naturally, when it comes time to ditch your paper note-pad, you refuse to to use the more popular gui-driven apps and want to find a way to use your editor instead. But when you start looking for a terminal-based notes framework (or plugin for your editor) you're blinded by crazy features and unwilling to learn a new tool. You've also already started keeping your notes in some text files and don't want to have to start over. Anyway, I went through the same thing and made this this lightweight tool (originally from some aliases in my bashrc) to do what I wanted it to do, which isn't a lot. But, like ruby, it has a nice interface, and it'll stay out of the way. That means you can choose where you keep your notes, how you organize them, how you track them (if you do), and what editor you use to write them. So if you already have your own notes, you can just point `peter-notes` at them and start using worlds simplest (and coolest) notes-manager. This is a cli tool, don't try to import it into some ruby source code.
Treste is a great tool for rapid prototyping projects. I use it in loads of my projects. There are a couple of things that kind of tick me off though; Trestle resources tend to become large files in the app/admin folder due to the way they are written. I find it hard to read/maintain them as a big file, so I split them up into smaller files and created a generator to ensure that they always follow a standard. Another pet peeve is the menu handling. Handling menu itmes in each resource quickly becomes a nightmare. Ordering them requires a lot of manual work. To keep things simpler, inspired by the work from the crowd at WinterCMS, I created a menu.yml file that is used to manage the menu. I also created a helper that simplifies the placing of the menu.
Chef-Berksfile-Env ================== A Chef plugin which allows you to lock down your Chef Environment's cookbook versions with a Berksfile. This is effectively the same as doing `berks apply ...` but via `knife environment from file ...`. Installation ------------ /opt/chef/embedded/bin/gem install chef-berksfile-env Usage ----- In your chef repo create a Berksfile next to your Chef environment file like this, chef-repo/environments/[ENV_NAME]/Berksfile This is the default location that will used by the plugin. We have to put the Berksfile in its own directory since [multiple Berksfiles can't exist in the same directory](https://github.com/berkshelf/berkshelf/issues/1247). The berksfile should include any cookbooks that your nodes or roles explicitly mention for that environment, source "https://supermarket.getchef.com" cookbook "java" cookbook "yum", "~> 2.0" ... Next we need to generate our Berksfile's lock file, berks install Your environment file must by in `.rb` format and look like this, require 'chef-berksfile-env' # The name must be defined first so we can use it to find the Berksfile name "my_env" # Load Berksfile locked dependencies as my environment's cookbook version contraints load_berksfile ... Now our environment will use the locked versions of the cookbooks and transitive dependencies generated by our Berksfile. Upgrading to the latest dependecies is now as simple as, berks install Our Berksfile also provides an easy way to ensure all the cookbooks and their versions that our environment requires are uploaded to our chef-server, berks upload How the Plugin Finds the Berksfile ---------------------------------- If you are curious how the plugin knows to find the Berksfile in `chef-repo/environments/[ENV]/Berksfile`, you want to put your Berksfile somewhere else or you have run into this error `Expected Berksfile at [/path/../Berksfile] but does not exist`, this section will explain how this works and ways to tweak the path or fix your error. `load_berksfile` has an optional argument which represents the path to your Berksfile. This path can be pseduo relative (explained in a moment) or absolute. By default the value is `environments/[ENV_NAME]/Berksfile`. By pseduo relative I mean that its a relative path but the plugin will check to see if the directory we are executing from partially matches our relative path. So if we are running knife from `/home/chef-repo/environments` and our relative path is `chef-repo/environments/dev/Berksfile` the plugin will see that the relative path is partially included in our execution directory and will attempt to merge the two to come up with `/home/chef-repo/environments/dev/Berksfile`. If we can't make any match at all we attempt to guess the path by just joining the relative path with our execution directory. So why do we do this? Well the only way to use this plugin is if your environment is in Ruby format. Chef's `knife from file ...` uses Ruby's `instance_eval` in order to do this. This means the code on Chef's end effectively looks like this, env.instance_eval(IO.read(env_ruby_file)) which means that any context about the location of the environment file is lost. So we have no great way to discern the location of our environment Ruby file, so instead we guess.
go (to project) do (stuffs) godo provides a smart way of opening a project folder in multiple terminal tabs and, in each tab, invoking a commands appropriate to that project. For example if the folder contains a Rails project the actions might include: starting mongrel, tailing one or more logs, starting consoles or IRB sessions, tailing production logs, opening an editor, running autospec, or gitk. godo works by searching your project paths for a given search string and trying to match it against paths found in one or more configured project roots. It will make some straightforward efforts to disambiguate among multiple matches to find the one you want. godo then uses configurable heuristics to figure out what type of project it is, for example "a RoR project using RSpec and Subversion". From that it will invokes a series of action appropriate to the type of project detected with each action being run, from the project folder, in its own terminal session. godo is entirely configured by a YAML file (~/.godo) that contains project types, heuristics, actions, project paths, and a session controller. A sample configuration file is provided that can be installed using godo --install. godo comes with an iTerm session controller for MacOSX that uses the rb-appscript gem to control iTerm (see lib/session.rb and lib/sessions/iterm_session.rb). It should be relatively straightforward to add new controller (e.g. for Leopard Terminal.app), or a controller that works in a different way (e.g. by creating new windows instead of new tabs). There is nothing MacOSX specific about the rest of godo so creating controllers for other unixen should be straightforward if they can be controlled from ruby. godo is a rewrite of my original 'gp' script (http://matt.blogs.it/entries/00002674.html) which fixes a number of the deficiencies of that script, turns it into a gem, has a better name, and steals the idea of using heuristics to detect project types from Solomon White's gp variant (http://onrails.org/articles/2007/11/28/scripting-the-leopard-terminal). godo now includes contributions from Lee Marlow <lee.marlow@gmail.com> including support for project level .godo files to override the global configuration, support for Terminal.app, and maximum depth support to speed up the finder. godo lives at the excellent GitHub: http://github.com/mmower/godo/ and accepts patches and forks.

== What's this? {ComicFury}[https://comicfury.com] is an excellent no-bullshit webcomic hosting site created and maintained by the legend Kyo. You should support them on {Patreon}[https://www.patreon.com/comicfury]! {Jekyll}[https://jekyllrb.com] is a highly regarded and widespread static site generator. It builds simple slowly-changing content into HTML files using templates. RageRender allows you to use your ComicFury templates to generate a static version of your webcomic site using Jekyll. You just supply your templates, comics and blogs, and RageRender will output a site that mimics your ComicFury site. Well, I say "mimics". Output is a static site, which means all of the interactive elements of ComicFury don't work. This includes comments, subscriptions, search, and comic management. === But why?! RageRender allows those of us who work on making changes to ComicFury site templates to test our changes before we put them live. With RageRender, you can edit your CSS, HTML templates and site settings before you upload them to ComicFury. This makes the process of testing changes quicker and makes it much more likely that you catch mistakes before any comic readers have a chance to see them. To do that, add a `searchterm` to the search page using defaults in your `_config.yml`: defaults: - scope: path: '' layout: search values: searchterm: "my character" The search that gets performed will be somewhat similar to how ComicFury will search your comic, but may not be exactly the same. === Putting changes on ComicFury Once you're done making changes, you can <tt>pack</tt> your layout: bundle exec jekyll pack The resulting file can be uploaded to ComicFury by going to your Webcomic Management, clicking "Edit Layout", then in the box labelled "Useful", click "Restore Layout Backup". === Stuff that doesn't work Here is a probably incomplete list of things you can expect to be different about your local site compared to ComicFury: - Any comments you specify in Front Matter will be present, but you can't add new ones - Search doesn't do anything at all - Saving and loading your place in the comic isn't implemented - GET and POST variables in templates are ignored and will always be blank - Random numbers in templates will be random only once per site build, not once per page call == Without Jekyll RageRender can also be used without Jekyll to turn ComicFury templates into templates in other languages.
